Famous geographer Ptolomy had recorded about Musiris among the ports and towns of that time. It is called as 'Murachipatanam' in Sanskrit and Muchiri in Tamil. Later it was also called as Makothai, Mahodayapuram, Mahodayapattanam.

Behind The Name of Kodungallur:

It was believed that a large number of 'Koodakallu' (remnants of ancient civilizations) were excavated from the place. So it was named as 'Koodakkalloor' (Place where koodakallu are found). Transferring through generations, the name got some changes and finally became as Kodungallur.

The Kaali (Kodungallur Amma) Temple in the heart of town is popular for its customs. People all over Kerala visits here. St. Thomas Cathedral of Azhicode is equally known for its historical and sacral value. It is believed that St. Thomas has arrived there. Cheraman Juma Musjid The first Mosque of India is in Kodungallur. Now it is being transferred into a tourist centre.
