History Of Government Girls HSS, Kodungallur

Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Kodungallur is located at the famous historical place Kodungallur, Thrissur District, Kerala, India.

KODUNGALLUR has its own significance even in ancient Indian History connected with 'Musiris' ancient port town in South India, Thiruvanchikkulam the capital of 'Chera-dynasty', an ancient Buddhist Centre, the historically important pilgrim centers like the first mosque in India Cheraman-Mosque, St. Thomas Church, Marthoma at Azhicode. All these located very near to the school. Govt. Girls HSS Kodungallur established as 'Crangannore Elementary School' in 1896 in 'Sathram Hall' which were connected with the historically famous Kodungallur SreeKurumba Temple. As the temple is at walkable distance from the school, the famous festivals Kodungallur 'Bharani' and 'Thalapoli', which attracts many pilgrims and tourists, are celebrated nearby this school. The School was upgraded as High School in 1925 and later as Higher Secondary in 1998-99.

Earlier The school was managed by His Highness Cochin-Maharajah with the help of British government. As the school belongs to the Sathram hall of the temple, only the aristocratic and upper cast Hindus were admitted to the school. There were mainly two categories, English and Malayalam medium management. Under English medium section students used to pay high fee, whereas the Malayalam medium students enjoyed the relaxation of fee. But students got chances to study almost all the subjects like Malayalam, Sanskrit, English, Maths, Music, Drawing, Craft etc.. . Most of the teachers were also from aristocratic families. Later the school was open to all sections of the society.

PRESENT STATUS OF GOVERNMENT GIRLS HSS, KODUNGALLUR

At present the situation entirely changed. The doors of the school opened for every sections of the society. The school mainly aims at the education of girls, so that the admission of boys is restricted up to 4th standard. Primary education is free by providing scholarships and concessions. In both High School and Higher Secondary School only girls are admitted, while the High School section is governed by the District Education Department and, administrated by Headmistress. The Higher Secondary School governing is done by Directorate of Higher Secondary Education and administrated by the Principal. Currently the school occupies 1,200 students and 60 teachers. The high school was upgraded as Higher Secondary in 1989-90. Higher secondary established with three disciplines: Humanities, Science, and Commerce. Well furnished and equipped Science labs, Computer labs, Project room, disciplined students, different student clubs, internet browsing facilities, etc... are the listed landmarks of the modern school. Endovements are executed for the excellent students. Strong PTA, Mother PTA, Staff Council, Campus Ministry, school complex and local administration, everything co-operates to make the school an established one in the state.

FACILITIES IN GIRLS HIGHER SECONDARY SECTION OF KGGHSS

The Girls Higher Secondary section came to life in the year 1998. The sole administrative authority of Higher secondary section is Principal and who is assisted by senior assistant and a group of competent teachers. The academic matters are planned and solved by SRG or School Resource Group. Principal is given departmental guidance from RDD or Regional Director of Higher Secondary Education, Director of Higher Secondary Education and in some cases by DPI. The Section offers the following groups with a good combination of the subjects.

SCIENCE: Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology

COMMERCE: Accountancy, Business studies, Economics, Maths

HUMANITIES: History, Politics, Economics, Geography

An efficient and responsible team of teachers can mould the students according to the expectations of the modern world.

FACILITIES IN UPPER PRIMARY AND HIGH SCHOOL SECTION OF KGGHSS

The Upper primary schools starts from 5th standard to 7th standard and High school starts from 8th to 10th standard, coming under the jurisdiction of the Headmistress. The Headmistress is often assisted by the senior assistant and the Staff secretary for academic matters. Both sections consists of 900 students and they are guided by 34 sincere and affectionate teachers. Here students have opportunities for selecting either English or Malayalam medium which are strictly followed by Department of Education, Kerala. Students are also avail the facilities for selecting any of the languages like Malayalam, Hindi, Arabic and Sanskrit.

FACILITIES IN LOWER PRIMARY SECTION OF KGGHSS

The Lower Primary section of the school, having 150 students from Lower Kindergarten to 4th standard, is under separate administration, headed by a separate headmistress. She is assisted by a group of enthusiastic teachers they are qualified for the kindergarten training. The LP section have their own PTA and their own Noon Feeding facilities. Students are taught as per state syllabus.

FACILITIES FOR STUDENTS IN KODUNGALLUR GIRLS HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL

• LIBRARY: The hall mark of our school is the all-round development of the students. For keeping this, they have developed a very good library. The library is enriched with more than 15,000 books in different languages. To ensure the standard of library the separate sections are provided. Reference books, journals, magazines, project reports, news papers etc... are assured to the students through the library.
• INTERNET CAFÉ: They provide internet café facility for their students to be familiar with the wide world of information technology and its various dimensions. The students utilize this facility in a right way for expanding their realm of knowledge.
• DIGITAL LIBRARY: This facility was inaugurated by Sri P A Gopi (Hon. Mun. chairman). It is very helpful for our students to gather more information's about the outer world. They can search for books, and world famous works of different subjects, and make current references about present issues.
• PROJECTOR ROOM: This provides to students advanced teaching facilities, using LCD Projector, Edusat (Satellite facilitated by Education department), CDs, Video Conferencing and other well equipped facilities. Students can get access to the real life situations through this facilities.
• PHONE BOOTH and COPY CENTRE: For the urgent requirements of the students they have facilitated them with a good phone booth as well as a photocopy centre. By these means of provisions, the safety of students can be assured. These facilities were installed by our responsible PTA for the year 2006.
• COMPUTER LAB: They have got two well equipped computer lab with thirty systems. Among them, one belongs to high school and the other to higher secondary. Both of them are connected with the multimedia internet facilities.
• SCIENCE LAB: In addition to computer lab, the students are also offered the lab facilities for the subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Geography to do experiments based on their studies. The labs are well equipped with the modern experimental devices.
• SCHOOL CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY: Through the school co-operative society, the essential study materials are supplied to the students at reasonable prices.
• STAFF COUNCIL: For the better prospects of the school they have formed a staff council and for academic activities a school resource group (SRG) were formed. The SRG meet at every month and the academic problems and hard spots are discussed.

PARENTS AND TEACHERS ASSOCIATION (PTA) OF KGGHSS

The school has a sincere and responsible Parent Teachers Association (PTA). It mainly stands for welfare and wellbeing of the students. The members of PTA are very co-operative with all the developmental activities of the school. They offer their best services recognizing the heart beats of the students.

MATHRUSANGAMAM (MOTHER PTA) OF KGGHSS

As a part of PTA a special wing of Mathrusangamam is being practiced for encouraging women participation.
